This book is the result of an honest and humble attempt to record the history of earlier generations of the Bigwood Family, in such a way that those who follow on may have some record of the pioneering spirit of earlier days in Southland.

Its compilation has taken much time, labour, and research but this has been offset by the willing help and co-operation of the members of various branches of the family.

Author’s note: I should like to express my grateful thanks to all for their help, and I trust that readers and researchers, as well as genealogists, may reap something of value from the heritage of the past.
